The gracefully dancing handkerchief is far more than a mere prop. More importantly, it embodies the exquisite "handkerchief skills" in traditional Chinese operas—one of the fundamental skills essential for opera performers. Originating from Errenzhuan, or song-and-dance duet popular in the Northeast of China, handkerchief skills have been significantly developed in regional operas like Jiju Opera. In the past,a square hankerchief was primarily used by dan or a female role, emphasizing "bu chu shou(no-release)" technique —which involves deft manipulations solely within the hand, such as waving, turning inside out, shaking and the like. These subtle movements were frequently employed to portray a maiden's delicate demeanor. In recent years, double-layered octagonal handkerchiefs with sequins are commonly used, developing over 30 stunning "chu shou(let go)" techniques such as twirling, catching with teeth, and balancing on palm etc.. Within the tiny confines of a handkerchief, performers demonstrate profound mastery in the Five Essential Techniques (hand movements, eye expressions, postures, perfroming fomula and stage walking), revealing the unique charm of traditional operas. Every dazzling second on stage crystallizes years of relentless practice behind the scenes.
